10 Signs you should consider an open relationship
Being in an open relationship isn’t for everybody and some don’t realize this until they actually go out and experience it. There are also others who feel a pull towards this type of lifestyle but their doubts and fears stop them from trying it even though it’s exactly what they want from relationships. When you can’t stop thinking about trying to be in an open relationship you can overcome your doubts by taking an honest look at your feelings because there will be signs that push you in the right direction.
1) You don’t enjoy monogamy
Monogamy isn’t right for everyone because it can make people feel smothered or tied down so think about how being in a committed relationship makes you feel. Do you love your partner but dread the thought of them being the only lover you have for the near future? Does monogamy make you anxious and wish you were still single even though you still want to date your partner? These are signs that an open relationship is something you should consider because it can give you the freedom you crave while being with the person you love.
2) You’re fine with your partner having a lover
If you don’t feel jealousy when others flirt with your partner or when you imaging them with a lover then you know that taking your relationship in this direction can be a good thing. You want to be accepting of both of you having fun with others and feel confident that it’s not going to cause fights or trust issues. This can take your relationship to a new level and strengthen your bond because you’re trusting each other in a way that you haven’t before.
3) You’re attracted to the idea of an open relationship
You should consider an open relationship if you’re attracted to the idea of them for the right reasons because if you do it for the wrong reasons you’re not going to enjoy it. When you think of what it would be like to be in an open relationship you need to make sure you’re not doing it out of lust or try be edgy. You should be attracted to the idea because you think it can help make you feel fulfilled, you know you’ll take it seriously and feel confident that you could make it work out.
4) You know your partner feels the same way
If you’re already in a relationship and both you and your partner feel like you’re ready for a change then an open relationship is something you should talk about. Be honest with them about why you want to try this new lifestyle and make sure they feel the same way before you make any decisions. Knowing that you and your partner are on the same page will give you confidence and help you feel like this is the right decision for you.
5) You want someone with similar sexual preferences
Everyone has different sexual preferences so there’s a good chance that you and your partner don’t have all of the same interests. Your sex life may be great but there are certain fetishes they’re not interested in and you don’t feel comfortable coercing them into participating in them with you. This is when an open relationship is something you should consider because it lets you meet someone who is a better match sexually. You can still be in love with your partner and have things mostly stay the same; you’re just hooking up with this person occasionally because they let you indulge in your sexual preferences.
6) It fits your moral code
Being in an open relationship may be right for you if it fits your moral code because this lets you explore and enjoy the experience without any negative feelings or doubts. Think about how you would feel if someone you knew was in this type of relationship or how you would feel telling someone that you were into this lifestyle. If you don’t feel like it’s wrong or cheating, you don’t feel jealousy when your partner wants to be active in it as well and if it doesn’t cause you shame then these are signs that morally you are fine with it.
7) You’re attracted to someone else
Being attracted to someone else while you’re in a relationship is a common thing to happen but if you sleep with them behind your partner’s back it’s cheating and can cause a lot of problems if you get caught. It can make you and your partner fight, there will be feelings of jealousy and there’s a good chance you’ll break up. You can avoid this happening if you admit to yourself that it might be better for you to be in an open relationship so that you can be honest about how you feel and date others who are comfortable with this.
8) You have a high sex drive
If you have a high sex drive then you should consider being in an open relationship because you’ll have more opportunities to have sex. This can stop you from pressuring your partner to be more sexually active and you can meet others who have similar sexual preferences to you. Knowing that you have this freedom can relieve a lot of pressure and you know you should go ahead with this if this is something you need in your life.
9) You easily separate sex and love
Separating sex and love isn’t something that everyone can do but if it’s possible for you then an open relationship may work out well in your favour. Being able to do this means you can have multiple lovers without getting emotionally involved and feeling guilty about sleeping around. You can have a more satisfying sex life and don’t have to worry about trying to make a serious relationship work unless you choose to do so.
10) You’re interested in different lifestyles
Some people like to explore different lifestyles so think about how open-minded and outgoing you are. If you’ve experimented with alternative sexual practices before and enjoyed it then an open relationship may be perfect for you. It lets you meet new people, push your sexual boundaries and give you freedom from commitment if you don’t want to be in a serious relationship with your lovers. This can bring more peace and happiness to your life if you’re feeling repressed or bored with how your sex life is going.
