9 Reasons why many people never plan to have kids
Many people never have kids and there’s thousands of reasons why they make such a big decision. Some don’t know how to deal with anxiety and know kids will add stress to their lives while others don’t have an active sexual life which makes it harder to start a family. Here are some of the more common reasons why people don’t plan to have kids so you can understand them better.
1) To have kids can be expensive
It can be expensive raising children, especially if you don’t like to buy children items secondhand, want to have more than one child or if your child has a medical condition. If you already have debt and are living pay cheque to pay cheque then you might want to focus on your financial well-being instead of having kids. The extra burden that comes with kids is something you might want to avoid and feel that the negative parts of parenthood outweigh the positive parts. By the time you get your finances under control you may want to enjoy the freedom that comes from not worrying about debt and decide to keep being child-free.
2) They don’t know how to deal with anxiety
Kids add a lot of stress to your life and if you don’t know how to deal with anxiety then you’re going to struggle even more than you do already if you start a family. Dealing with anxiety can make you a bad parent if you don’t learn any coping skills and some people think that it’s better to stay child-free. Kids need constant attention for the first few years of their life and that takes away their parent’s time to practice self-care, which are coping skills they may use to relieve some of their anxiety. They need to seriously think about whether or not they can mentally and emotionally deal with having kids and some choose not to because they don’t know if they’ll be able to handle it.
3) They don’t want their lives to change
Some people don’t want to have kids because they’re happy with the way their lives are and aren’t interested in making such a big life change. Having kids is a lifelong responsibility and they’ll have to always come first which takes away your freedom and will change everything you do. You have to learn how to balance time with alone with your kids and time alone with your partner as well as family time activities and alone time when you can focus on yourself. You can no longer do things on the spur of the moment and every time you make a decision you have to factor in the impact it will have on your kids.
4) They don’t have parental desire
It’s important to have parental desire before deciding whether or not to have kids because there’s no point in having them just because that’s what you’re expected to do. Some people know that they don’t like kids or don’t want to be a parent and that their feelings are unlikely to change over time so they never even consider the possibility of starting a family. It just isn’t a part of their life and isn’t something they think about because there’s other things they are passionate about like their career or spending time with family and friends.
5) They don’t have an active sexual life
Not everyone has an active sexual life either because they’re asexual, socially awkward, have commitment issues or sex isn’t that important to them. It’s a lot harder for these people to have kids because they need find a way to get an active sexual life so they can conceive naturally or they have to have the financial ability to use resources like sperm donors or adoption agencies. They know that having kids is more difficult for them so they accept that not having them is part of the way their life is.
6) They have fertility problems
When people know they have a family history of fertility problems or that they have a medical condition like PCOS they won’t plan on having kids because they don’t want to deal with the disappointment that comes from not being able to get pregnant or not having a successful pregnancy. This is a very personal issue so they won’t talk about it and will give vague answers like not having time or not being ready to become a parent when the topic of having kids comes up. It’s easier to say that they don’t plan on having kids instead of focusing on the fact that they can’t have them because it changes the subject quickly and helps them avoid an awkward conversation with someone who doesn’t understand what they’re going through.
7) They don’t think they’ll be good parents
Most people want to give their kids a better life than they had growing up and if they have doubts about their ability to do that then they’ll decide it’s better not to have them. They don’t want to bring children into the world and not give them the life they deserve. They may feel this way because they had a difficult childhood or they may have struggles as adults that they think might impact their parenting skills. They feel it’s better to be without kids and will work on building a life that’s right for them.
8) They have a family history of medical conditions
There are quite a few medical conditions that can be passed on genetically and those who have a history of serious illnesses will think twice about having kids because they don’t want to put them at risk of going through something like that. They might also feel like they’re not capable of looking after a kid that could have a medical condition and they’d rather have no children than take the risk of having one they’d struggle to look after.
9) They get fulfillment from other children in their lives
Some people like children but their desire to have kids of their own isn’t strong enough for them to make that kind of lifelong commitment and they get fulfillment from other children in their lives. These could be nieces, nephews or godchildren and they love these kids and spend time with them, treating them like they were their own. This is enough to make them happy and they get to satisfy their parental feelings while still getting to live their lives the way they want to.
